Visa J-1 Program has different categories to apply

The Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961 established the J-1 category to promote foreign policy objectives of mutual understanding between people of United States and the rest of the countries through educational and cultural activities.

There are 15 different categories for the Visa J-1 Program:

  • Business, Management, Commerce and Finance
  • Hospitality and Tourism
  • Information, Media and Communications
  • Public Administration and Law
  • Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics

The purpose of the Visa J-1 Program is to provide the international participants with:

  • Opportunities for their professional development
  • An insight into the American know-how in the field of training
  • A wider understanding of the American’s society and culture

J-1 Trainees are expected to share the professional knowledge gained in the U.S. upon the return to their home country, at the end of the Program. The Visa J-1 Program is also intended to allow Americans to learn about the culture and expertise of the participant’s home country.

Visa J-1 ALLOWS the applicant to:

  • Participate in a Training Program
  • Obtain a Social Security Number
  • Obtain a U.S. Driver’s License

Visa J-1 DOES NOT ALLOW the applicant to:

  • Change Host Employer
  • Another employment outside the original Training Program
  • Extend the Training Program past 18 months
